A New Way of Thinking about STEM Safety

STEM safety does so much more than protect your students. It helps maintain the classroom environment, so the focus stays on learning and doing. Creating a safe lab space is about more than teaching students the dos and don’ts during a project or experiment.

Your Students Could Be at Risk!

A 2020 national survey on safety in K-12 STEM and CTE classrooms uncovered some shocking statistics:

  • 80% of STEM and science teachers reported an injury in the surveyed year
  • 77% of those accidents involved students
  • 51% of surveyed schools faced accidents or related litigation
  • Classes with over 24 students were 48% more likely to have an accident occur
  • Formal safety training cut accidents by 51%

Identify Lab Safety Gaps in Your STEM Program Today

It can be difficult to know where to start as we strive for safer STEM classrooms.
The best first step is asking the right safety questions.
  • Do you have a Chemical Hygiene Plan?
  • Do you have a Hazard Communication Standard?
  • Are your STEM teachers and admins appropriately safety trained?
  • Do your schools complete annual lab safety inspections?
  • Do your schools use student safety acknowledgment forms?
  • Is there adequate and appropriate PPE in each school?
  • Do you have an accurate and current chemical and equipment inventory for your schools?
  • Are you comfortable with the existing safety program in your school district, knowing you could be personally accountable?

While there will always be risk involved in running a STEM program, you can make it much safer by asking the right questions and implementing safety training to address identified gaps.

How To Create a Safe STEM Learning Environment

Safety training and awareness are the best ways to reduce accidents and injuries. Follow these steps to start promoting safe lab practices at your school.

STEP 1: Identify possible risks in STEM programs

STEP 2: Follow proper and safe operating lab procedures

STEP 3: Recognize possible sources of hazards

STEP 4: Perform a Hazard Analysis/Risk Assessment

STEP 5: Take appropriate safety action PRIOR to any planned lab activity

EXPERT TIP: Implement the “AAA” approach (Analysis-Assessment-Action) to understand and evaluate potential safety hazards.

Cloud-Based Safety Applications

Safety Inspection Application (SIA)

A mobile and web-based application that allows school systems to deploy standardized safety inspections, allowing administrators, educators, and staff to easily complete safety audits and inspections for laboratories, storage facilities, CTE rooms, classrooms, and maker spaces. The inspection tool can record results with visual evidence, note any equipment to be repaired/replaced, or identify any unsatisfactory condition discovered. SIA generates an inspection report, including documentation and images captured during the physical inspection, and is designed to help schools and school districts better prepare for annual safety inspections and support overall safety objectives. Volume pricing is available.

Safety Acknowledgment Form Application (SAFA)

Designed to ensure that a school or district remains safe and meets local and national regulatory requirements by electronically managing safety acknowledgment forms/contracts for every student for every class. A safety acknowledgment form is a document that students sign to indicate that they have received and understood safety policies and procedures for activities within a class. Volume pricing is available.

STEAM Inventory Management (SIM)

A cloud-based software application that allows a school to manage inventory (e.g., equipment, materials, education kits, chemicals). From quantities and locations to expiration alerts, and SDS forms, SIM will help schools comply with various OSHA and state safety and purchasing regulations. Licensed annually based on the number of “sites.”

Online Training and Safety Resources

Science Safety Pathways meet the needs of Educators based on their role, grade, subject area, and career stage. Individual pathways are designed to provide educators with a thorough understanding of the various safety concerns and issues with STEM and CTE programs and provide learners with a deeper understanding of general and specific safety-related topics (e.g., hazards, risks, best practices, and safety procedures), upon successful completion certificates, and micro-credentials are earned. All topical content is reviewed every 30 days and is aligned to legal safety standards and better professional safety practices. These are asynchronous personalized safety qualification programs for educators and administrators. These range in length from 6 to 14 hours with a multi-modality knowledge transfer instructional design methodology based on scaffolding content and making deeper connections for the learner through evaluation and assessment protocols and scenario-based learning. There is a learning pathway for every educator and administrator in the school system that will help make the entire district ‘safer’. Volume pricing is available.
